The iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro models are rumored to have many important camera upgrades compared to the iPhone 13, while the standard iPhone 14 versions receive only a few minor improvements.
As we all know, this year’s high-end iPhone 14 Pro versions will receive many improvements in screen, chipset and configuration, while the standard version has almost no difference. The rumored new 48MP wide-angle camera of the iPhone 14 is expected to be exclusive to the Pro models, while the standard iPhone 14 models will retain the same 12MP wide-angle camera as the iPhone 13 series.
Earlier this year, Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said that the iPhone 14 Series will have an upgraded front camera with autofocus and a wider aperture of f/1.9. This component is expected to make Apple 3 times more expensive.
A wider aperture allows more light to pass through the lens and to the camera sensor, resulting in improved image quality. These upgrades could result in better depth of field effects in Portrait mode, while autofocus could improve focusing during FaceTime and Zoom video calls. While the selfie camera on the iPhone 13 Series has a fixed focal length and a smaller f/2.2 aperture.

The 48MP main camera is the most rumored feature on the iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max. Due to the increased megapixel count, the iPhone 14 Pro’s Wide camera pixel will be smaller than that of the iPhone 13 Pro and 13 Pro Max.
The new Wide sensor is said to belong to the Sony family, like the iPhone 13 Pro. Despite the variation in pixel size, the iPhone 14 Pro is expected to feature the same Dual Pixel Autofocus (DPAF) system, marketed by Apple as “Focus Pixels” that the iPhone has offered since the iPhone 6 in 2014 and the same ability to shoot 16:9 HDR video at up to 60 fps.
The sensor of this device is said to be 1/1.3-inch wide, a 21.2% increase over the 1/1.65-inch sensor width of the Wide camera on the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max. This means an estimated 57% increase in sensor area compared to the iPhone 13 Pro.
This increase in sensor size requires a larger lens to capture more light, resulting in a significantly larger rear camera array. The 1/1.3-inch sensor size is the same as Samsung’s 50MP GN1 sensor, used in the Google Pixel 6.
Overall, the iPhone 14 Pro should deliver larger, higher-resolution images with better detail, but at the risk of poorer low-light performance and images that are more susceptible to noise.
The 48MP camera system is expected to be limited to the iPhone 14 Pro models and allows for 8K video recording, a significant upgrade over the iPhone 13 Pro’s 12MP camera and 4K video recording capabilities. High-resolution 8K video shot with the iPhone 14 Pro is also said to be suitable for viewing on Apple’s AR/VR headset.
Previously, Kuo said he believes the camera quality of the iPhone 14 Pro models will “elevate the ability to take photos with a mobile phone’s camera to a new level”.
